I am going to tell you one thing that will immensely help your company increase productivity, efficiency, and scale.
Recently I visited a PLC (Vitrox) in Penang, Malaysia. I was amazed by the campus. What thrilled me the most is the focus and care they take for their employees. I went to the cafe for a discussion and was surprised that the cafe they have is 100% vegetarian and organic, the employees are encouraged to participate and help grow vegetables at the campus. We asked them about the secret recipe of keeping their employees engaged, productive and motivated. They gave a simple answer: all they do is focus on their learning and development. The company has been on a steep incline in terms of revenue and profit with the latest quarter ended (Q4) with a 42% jump in revenue. The results speak for themselves.
Various studies and research have shown that if the employees are truly engaged, the impact is enormous to organizations. However, not all companies are still focusing on employee engagement. The current business model is so dynamic and complex that most C-suits are focused on KPI's and slowly losing sight of key resources unconsciously.
Recent research published in Int. J. Environment, Workplace, and Employment, Vol. 5, No. 1, 2019 by Dr. Sandya and MM Sulphey and their analysis revealed that relational contract and goal internalization as the most significant contributors to employee engagement.
Let me focus on one of the components, Goal Internalization. Most organizations have goals; however, the process of setting, reviewing and connecting with bigger goals (Org/Company) is either missing or has a weak link. This incorrect goal setting is one of the biggest reasons employees feel disconnected and disengaged.
In two ways Goals can be defined - 1. Outcome-Based 2. Output-Based. Both are necessary for every organization. The process of setting goals and measuring them is a critical part of any organization.
If the broader goals are set using output-based then the culture one will be imbibing is "busyness" and yielding no "Results." However only outcome-based goals are used in Organization, then the culture of being strategic and yield in the only talk, discussion, meeting, collaborating, deciding and no action will take place.
The organization should know when to use Outcome-based and when to use Output-based and find the optimal combination of both. This process will yield significant engagement from the employee and in turn, will drive companies' results.
